Class 2 Newsletter - Spring Term

 January 2019

Dear Parents/Carers,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome back to Class 2! I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and had lots of time to relax and have fun with family and friends. Thank you so much for all of your kind words, cards and gifts over the Christmas period, we are all very grateful and hope that the children all liked their gift from us too.

This Spring Term we are getting stuck into two new and exciting topics with lots of great learning, a class assembly, a class dress up day and a class trip at the end of February! It looks like it’s going to be a busy one!

Congratulations to Ava, Brooke and Edward who received the most merits during the Autumn Term and who had hot chocolate with the head teacher. Also, a super well done to Ava for gathering the most stickers on her learning behaviour leaf which won her a bonus 1000HPs. All merits and stickers are reset for the Spring Term so everyone has a fresh start! We look forward to seeing lots of children showing the Heathwood Way during the Spring Term, I wonder who will get the most this time…

This Half Term’s Topic

Our first topic of the Spring Term is ‘Why am I famous?’ where we will be finding out all about a selection of famous people.  We will focus on Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole, Sir David Attenborough, Tim Berners-Lee and members of the Royal family.

Reading

We encourage you to support your child’s reading by spending time listening to them read, reading to them, talking about what you have just read and, most importantly, enjoying reading! In class we aim to listen to your child read as often as possible. We will change reading books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I will hear all children read in their weekly Guided Reading sessions and Mrs Marsh will support your child to complete a variety of reading activities on a weekly basis. Please ensure that all reading at home is logged in your child’s diary so that we can award house points –

3x a week at home = 10HPs

5x a week at home = 20HPs

Superstar readers who consistently read more = 100HPs

Well done to all the children who have already collected lots of house points so far this year – KEEP IT UP!

Spellings

We will send home a bank of spellings words on a Tuesday that we are working on that week and we will have a small spelling quiz on the following Tuesday. It will be clear in your child’s diary when we are having a spellings quiz. If you are unsure, please come and ask one of us. Remember that children should be able to read all high frequency words from Year 1 accurately, if you need more guidance about this please come and speak to us.

Homework

We will be sending home weekly maths ACE it challenges and book reviews for your child to complete. Details will be visible in children’s diaries. Children who are taking the time to complete these at home and who are showing lots of effort will be rewarded with merits which will be handed out during assembly time.

Lexia

We are completing Lexia on a daily basis at school during your child’s designated slot and we are thrilled with all the progress the children are making! Please ensure that your child has headphones in school, as these are vital for concentration and help them with the activities.

PE

PE lessons will take place on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school at all times (black shorts, purple t-shirt and plimsolls/trainers). Now that the weather is colder children should have black tracksuit bottoms, a black fleece/jumper and trainers within their PE bag. Trainers are also used for our mile a day before lunchtime, so please ensure they are at school every day.

If you have any concerns about your son/daughter or any questions/queries then please feel free to call into class after school to speak to me or a member of the class 2 team.

Many thanks,

Miss O’Reilly
